Certain sire lines like that of

Royal King

result in an exceptional number
of champions such as

Smart Little Lena

&
Wild Thing

as well an other champions like Lynx Melody, Ms Royal Mahogany, Royal Blue Boon, and Royal Fletch (see examples of lineage on the right).

Research has shown that the female (X) chromosome carries certain recessive genes that produce physical characteristics that can result in exceptional performance. Recessive genes can only manifest themselves if inherited from both sire and dam and only if the genes are passed in a certain way. X-chromosomes can be passed from mother to son, mother to daughter, and father to daughter, but not father to son*. High athletic and winning ability can be traced through "the tail female line" and is known as the X-Factor after the female (X) chromosome.

The broodmare sire is thus key in successful breeding programs and maternal lineage may be more important than the paternal side of a pedigree.

Exceptional performance mares (like Royal Blue Boon and Autumn Boon) are "double copy mares" - mares that obtain their X chromosomes from a common ancestor. Mares inbred to Royal King through his daughters could have both their X chromosomes from Royal King.

* The sex of a foal is determined from the chromosomes in a stallion's sperm. Stallions pass X or Y chromosomes; mares pass only X chromosomes. The result of an X and Y combination is a colt; the result of X and X combination is a filly.
